When nobody is expecting you

The daytime takes care of itself. The mail carrier sees you, a neighbor waves, the phone rings. It's the other hours that worry people who live alone.

Most of the plan costs nothing

Orville's plan isn't a gadget or a monthly contract. Here's what each piece costs to set up.

The pieceWhat it costs
A morning signal with a neighbor (blinds, porch light, or a one-word text)Free
A daily check-in call (many sheriff's offices run one)Free where offered
Night-lights on the path from bed to bathroomA few dollars
Two people with your key, and no key hidden outsideFree
The Fridge Sheet that talks for you when you can'tA sheet of paper
Both books and the printable Toolkit$27, once

Programs vary by town. The books show you exactly what to ask, and where. No monthly fee. No subscription.

The books

The three books standing together: Book One in navy, Book Two in deep red, and the green Kitchen-Table Toolkit behind them.
Book One cover: Who Finds Me? Found in Time. Gold title on navy, Orville at a lamp-lit window.

Book One

Found in Time

The part that gets you found.

The daily "I'm up" signal, the 15 night habits, the free check-in calls many sheriff's offices run (and exactly what to say when you call), who has your key, a house number help can find at night, the fridge sheet that talks for you when you can't, and how to make yourself expected.

Book Two cover: Who Finds Me? When Something Happens. Gold title on deep red, a worried Orville at a lamp-lit window.

Book Two

When Something Happens

The people around you, and the plan for the day help arrives.

Three neighbors with one job each, word-for-word scripts for asking without feeling like a burden, seven people a week, a plan for your pet, the hospital bag by the door, getting through a power outage, and the kitchen drawer binder.

Toolkit cover: The Kitchen-Table Toolkit. A filled-in Fridge Sheet held by a red magnet on green, with Orville's round photo.

The Kitchen-Table Toolkit

The Kitchen-Table Toolkit

Print it, fill it in with a pencil, keep it where it works.

The Bedside Night Checklist, the Goodnight Agreement, the Fridge Sheet, Who Has My Key, a cut-out pet wallet card and door sign, the hospital bag checklist, the emergency phone list, and a 30-day setup plan: one small step a day.

How it fits together

  1. Start with the Toolkit. Print My Hours and answer one honest question: if something happened tonight, who would know, and when?

  2. Read Book One and set up the daily signal and the night plan, one small step a day, about ten minutes each, with the 30-day plan.

  3. Then Book Two: your three neighbors, your pet, your hospital bag, and the house binder.

Look inside: see the pages before you buy

Book One, page 3, "Before You Start": a photo of Orville at his kitchen table above his letter, which begins "Friend, If you're reading this, you probably live alone."
Book Two, Chapter 8, "The Three-Neighbor Plan": the chapter number, Orville's rule in a yellow box, and the opening paragraphs.
Toolkit page, "The Fridge Sheet": a fill-in form with lines for name, date of birth, address, emergency contacts, doctor and pharmacy, and a box for medicines and allergies.
Toolkit page, "The 30-Day Plan": fifteen numbered days with a tick box and one small task each, and where each task is explained.

For someone you love

If someone you love lives alone, this is a gentle way to help. Print the Toolkit and fill in the first pages together: the Goodnight Agreement, Who Has My Key, the Fridge Sheet. It's an easy way to start a conversation that's hard to start.

My guarantee

Read it for 30 days. If it's no use to you, I'll give the money back. Write within 30 days and you get every dollar back. You keep the files. I'd rather lose the sale than have you keep a plan you don't need.

From Orville

I'm Orville. I'm 77. I lost my wife Joanne in 2009, and we never had children. For thirty-six years I worked on a line crew at the electric co-op, and up there the first rule is simple: you never climb a pole without a second man on the ground, watching.

Living alone, you still need that second man. You just have to set him up yourself. These books are how I did it: a neighbor who watches my blinds, a phone call every morning, two people with my key, and a sheet on my fridge that talks for me when I can't. None of it is complicated. Most of it costs nothing.

Who it's for

This is for you if you live alone, or you worry about someone who does; you'd rather have a plan than a gadget; and you're willing to make a few phone calls and fill in a few pages.

It's not for you if you want a device that does everything for you, or you're looking for medical or legal advice. The books send those questions to your doctor and a lawyer.

Questions

Is it a paper book?

No. It's 3 PDF files. You read the books on any screen and print the Toolkit at home.

How do I get it after I pay?

Click any order button and pay on the secure checkout page (card, Apple Pay or Google Pay). Right after you pay, our store (Whop) emails you a 6-digit code. Type that code on the screen, and your "Your books" page opens with all three PDFs. You can come back to it any time from the receipt email. Open the Kitchen-Table Toolkit first and print it at home. Stuck? Email us and we will send the files directly.

Is the print big enough?

Yes. Both books are set in large print, and the Toolkit is made for writing on with a pencil.

Is there a monthly fee?

No. One payment, and new pages are free.

Does it work outside the US?

The plan does. Some programs are American, but the books show you what to ask locally.

Can I get my money back?

Yes, within 30 days, and you keep the files.

Can I buy it for my mother or father?

Yes. Print the Toolkit and fill it in together.

Go set one thing up before tonight.
